These traits were explained as he shared his transition from his initial job in a family- run grocery store to his current position as the manager of an up-and-coming, newly-renovated store in Napoleon, Ohio. His store is a showcase for the family-owned-and-operated Main Stop chain which is part of Saneholtz-Mckarns.

Coming from a retail grocery background, he found himself drawn to the fast-paced yet rewarding environment of managing a Main Stop store. A Willingness to Learn and Adapt

Starting in retail at 16, Don spent years working in grocery management before making the transition to convenience stores in late 2022. While the industries share similarities, the shift required a new mindset.

“I had to be willing to change a little bit. Some of the management principles are the same, but a C-store is actually easier in some ways—fewer employees, less equipment to manage, and a stronger focus on customer convenience,” Don shared.

One of his biggest surprises? The importance of speed and efficiency. Unlike in grocery, where longer interactions are common, convenience retail thrives on quick, friendly service.

“We want customers to feel welcome but also be able to get what they need and be on their way,” Don shared.

Commitment to Leadership and Growth

As a c-store manager, Don believes in leading by example and meeting his team where they are. With a staff ranging from 21 to 61 years old, he tailors his coaching to each individual’s strengths.

“If someone is more outgoing, we encourage that, but sometimes we have to tone it down a little. It’s all about balance,” he said.

His calm and steady leadership approach keeps the store running smoothly—even on the most challenging days.
